NOW THEY ARE REMEMBERED
When Wrotham’s War Memorial was dedicated on 5th August 1923, it was inscribed with 26 names.
Research by the Wrotham Historical Society has established that there should have been 13 more names.
The omission has been rectified and the missing names of those thirteen have now been duly inscribed on a plaque that has been inserted into the North side of the Memorial:
R.Andrews S.O.Bird G.F.Brown L.Brown A.H.Chatfield W.Cunningham G.Goodsell J.F.Johnson S.G.Longhurst A.Roots J.S.Sears T.R.Springett B.J.Streatfield
This has only been achieved by the generosity of Wrotham’s villagers and those who work here. In particular, the staff and management of Laurie Plantations, the customers of The Wrotham Shop, the children and staff of St Georges School, frequenters of the Three Post Boys, The George and Dragon and The Rose and Crown public houses, Wrotham Parish Council, The Parochial Church Council of St Georges Church, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, Wrotham Historical Society and many individual donors who wish to remain anonymous.
The re-dedication took place on Sunday 11th November 2007 as part of the annual Service of Remembrance conducted by Revd Brenda Hurd.
They shall grow not old As we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun And in the morning We shall remember them.
